Do you remember the TV sitcom Cheers? For those of you who don’t, Cheers was a very cool bar where everyone “knew your name” and would make you feel like family; it was a world unto itself. This is the same feeling you get when you enter One Stop Furniture Shop in Sidney. You’re treated like family and taken care of like a mother takes care of her child, but without all the smothering and lectures.

I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t go shopping for furniture much, so I was shocked when I walked into One Stop Furniture Shop. I was greeted with a genuine smile and didn’t feel like I was being scoped by vultures waiting to prey on my carcass at the first sign of weakness. You  know what I mean: you go into some high pressure  sales places when you’re looking for home electronics or to buy a washing machine or dishwasher, and you get these cheesy, lowclass, mediocre sales people pretending to be nice to you, asking you stupid questions, and you know they don’t really care about you; they just want to make a sale so they can take their commission money and go buy some booze  that night or save up for their dream vacation to Las Vegas. How refreshing it was to be left alone to wander, sit, touch and feel my way around the store. As soon as my mind started  wanting some questions answered, a consultant appeared, smiled and asked if she could help me with any anything… perfect timing! It turns out the person who came to assist me was none other than Janice McEachern, the owner of this fabulous store full of furniture delights. I found out that One Stop Furniture Shop is 100 per cent locally owned and operated and everyone who works here is  local as well. You can tell a lot about a place by the person who owns it, and I can tell you that Janice has a heart of gold and sincerely believes passionately in what she does.

Janice has created a remarkable business. She and her staff act like your personal shoppers in the furniture world. They sit with you and ask questions about what you really want, as opposed to only focusing on what’s for sale on the floor of the store. You see, they can source just about any kind of furniture available on the market, from colour and material to brands and price point. They will take your vision, locate the right furniture, and have it shipped to their store; then you go down and check it out.If you don’t like it, no worries; they’ll send it back, no questions asked. They also have a price guarantee that states if you find the furniture you bought from them somewhere else for less money, they will pay you the difference. They also make sure each piece of furniture is delivered to the room of your house that you want it in, and not by a delivery guy named Bubba who was out drinking the night before—their delivery crew are caring and professional people who take pride in the delivery service they provide.

Janice and her staff have been able to pull off being absolutely professional, yet staying focused on making you feel a part of their family. I would have to describe One Stop Furniture Shop as classy, relaxed and fun. It gets better. Janice is a huge community supporter and donates money to local kids’ baseball and hockey teams and supports the local chamber of commerce and Lions Club. Because of the integrity of this business, when you come here, you can be sure there are no games when it comes to pricing; they speak the truth and charge the "same price for everyone".

I’ve been around the block a few dozen times and have witnessed my fair share of slimy business practices. You’ve seen the “Going Out Of Business” sale game, where instead of selling off all their stuff in a weekend at real discounts, the slimy company seems to keep their doors open for months and the discounts are small, or they’ve jacked up their prices so high that when they offer 50 to 70 per cent off, it seems like a great deal, but they’re still making a great profit.

One Stop Furniture Shop sources their furniture from reputable companies and deals skilfully with these companies for the best pricing. Because One Stop chose a location off the beaten path, their rent is very low, so they can pass all of these savings on to their customers. When I say off the beaten path, it’s not too far off. Do you know where the famous Fish on Fifth restaurant is? Well, One Stop is on the other side of the street, and although their front entrance is off a parking lot, their awning and sign shine like a beacon to guide you into this one-of-a-kind gem of a store.

I found out some neat facts from one of One Stop’s outstanding consultants, Marla. She informed me that the owner’s neighbors helped renovate their new location, and these were the same people who renovated their old location. That says a lot about the owner, Janice. It’s not surprising to hear a story like this because Janice is a good human being who sincerely wants to help others and who treats people with honesty and integrity, so people automatically want to help her. She was so wonderful to me that I wanted to write this story about her business.Janice is one of those rare people who has found her calling in life, has mastered it and loves it. She admires her staff so much that she insisted I list each one of them in this article: Marla Driebergen, Kim Coates, Emily McEachern, Luke Jacob, Brody Pepper, Keith Miller and Murphy McEachern. Whether you’re looking for furniture or not, I urge you to go to One Stop Furniture Shop in Sidney just for the experience. It’s rare to find such a wonderful shop where people know your name.
